Rooms with views

This months travel link up is another perfect one ‘a room with a view’!  One of the reasons we travel is to relax looking at a view we don’t have at home!  Why pay for accommodation if you aren’t guaranteed a view?!  Well that is my thinking anyway! On that basis… this isn’t going to be about just one view!!

Sometimes sadly it is either too expensive or challenging to guarantee a view (I’m thinking Dubai…) but largely the view is one of the ways that a hotel and/or a cottage sells itself!  Thank goodness, as there isn’t anything much better than sitting in your room (or on the room’s balcony) having a sundowner…

I’ll be honest, my favourite room view is always going to be of the sea, but for one reason or another we haven’t actually stayed at that many places with a sea view!  I think this is largely because we seek peace and quiet when we are away and that is easier to find a little way off the beaten track (beach front).  But our room at Round Hill last April was quite something!

But there is more to a view than the sea – I didn’t know until February quite how long I could watching the changing shades and shapes of sand dunes.  In fact it is a very long time – I didn’t get bored in 4 days, and I didn’t manage to read much book! You can probably see why!  The joys of a terrace room!

Another spot in Jamaica that gave something equally unique was up on the edge of the blue mountains.  We only stayed here for one night, but with jet lag that meant we stayed on the right night – the first night!! We were up with the larks (or hummingbirds I guess) and what a view we were greeted with having arrived in the pitch black.  And to accompany that view with the blue mountain coffee – wow – you could hate coffee and still have found a little slice of heaven!

Continuing on my search for uniqueness – how about the view from the top floor of a tree house on the edge of the Drakensberg…

Whilst I have got my eye on a fancy water villa in the Maldives (this has me sold) for my next BIG birthday (Mr P has a fair number of years to plan for it!!) what we are increasingly finding is that self-catering is often in the best ‘with view’ locations.  What a relief, as we do tend to favour a s/c break in the UK or on a longer overseas trip that I’ve been able to plan properly!

One Christmas we stayed in Pembrokeshire and this view greeted us every morning:

And for something a little different – the imagine waking up to these hungry llamas every morning waiting to see what left over vegetables we’d be feeding them:

We are literally just back from a wonderful stay in Cornwall and our room looked out across Mount’s Bay from Mousehole – stunning and  peaceful, apart from a few seagulls!  Review coming up soon on ALTB.

But a final warning… be careful what you wish for in a bid for a great view!  We visited Rhode Island one October and before heading to the Vanderbilt in Newport, spent a couple of nights in a tiny little cottage on the waterfront in Bristol.  I don’t think I could have found a more ‘Dawson’s Creek’ style place if I’d tried.  The wind blew and blew – I think it was the tail end of one of the big hurricanes in 2011 from memory!  The little cottage stood up to the weather just fine and fortunately there was no flooding, but put it this way – we slept incredibly well the next night in a hotel in Newport with less of a view!!  The cottage was however beautiful the next day when the storm had passed!!

Another great travel link up with Kelly, Emma and Rebecca!

Agree – a view like this on a work trip wouldn’t really be the same!!

Ahh beautiful views – I have known that first one too though, I stayed at the Mount Haven hotel too! I actually used to live in Marazion, we owned a shop there, next to the pasty shop called Cobble Corner – next to the alley that takes you to the beach.

A gorgeous spot to live and enjoy the view on a daily basis – we were just there last week enjoying the same view (with much worse weather)!

The first time I read your blog was about your post on Qasr al Sarab and I still have it bookmarked as I want to stay as that view is too die for! A room should always have a view in my world as well xx

Oh you really must go, I was dubious it could be so good but it really is! Don’t bother with the options nearer Dubai or AD, you must get out into the really remote area of the empty quarter!

Qasr al Sarab looks incredible! I could sit and look at that for hours. Some beautiful views – you’ve been lucky!

There have been some dire views too, not delivering what was promised… Best forgotten!!

You have had some wonderfull views – the desert one is especially striking.

      Incredible ones – thank you

Loving the view from The Old Coastguard. I’ve been looking for a spot to put my feet up in Cornwall for a while now, and that balcony looks just like me,

I’ve never been to Cornwall but literally every photo I’ve seen of it looks so stunning that I can’t even believe it’s right here in England – that photo is just gorgeous 🙂

    • September 2, 2014 / 6:23 pm

Well worth the trip! I hope you visit soon!

  8. September 2, 2014 / 7:46 pm

I do love a sea view – though those dunes look beautiful too, I could be converted!

    • September 2, 2014 / 8:21 pm

      Nothing ventured nothing gained!! 😉

Cornish views really are something else! There’s something so peaceful about a sea view though, it’s easy to spend hours, with a glass of wine (or 2) just looking out at the sea! Great views Anna 🙂

    • September 3, 2014 / 7:43 am

Or a glass of fizz – Cornish Bubbles from Camel Valley are very good!

You cant beat waking up to Llamas, surely? Nothing like a room with a view.

    • September 3, 2014 / 7:44 am

Its great, I’ve never had pets and these were great as they ate up our leftovers and of course couldn’t be in the house!

  11. September 3, 2014 / 9:47 am

I will happily let you book a room with a view for me…:) You certainly have great taste and these views are right up my street, or over the water or wine etc …as the case may be!! Excellent post, as if we don’t get what we want in our accommodation it puts a strain on other aspects of a trip.

    • September 3, 2014 / 6:06 pm

I think my husband wouldn’t allow it – I already spend too much trawling the internet searching for my next good view!! Agree – accommodation has to be spot on for the trip to be too!

I absolutely love a room with a view – makes a holiday so much more special. We’ve just returned from Austria and the views were fabulous.

    • September 3, 2014 / 6:06 pm

I agree – should never scrimp on the view! Austria must be stunning in the summer, we’re going to Vienna in November

  13. September 3, 2014 / 6:43 pm

Hi Anna… love the picture of St. Michael’s Mount through the wine glass! 🙂

Also liking that view at Qasr al Sarab… wonderful!!

    • September 3, 2014 / 7:28 pm

My mum has actually asked for the photo so she can get it put on the wall, i’m thinking I should too! Qasr al saran – well worth investigating!

Rooms with views, almost like the movie but from around the world. You’ve been to some wonderful places with amazing views!

As Mr Emerson said – Women like looking at a view. Men don’t?? 🙂

I am a huge Cornwall lover as you have probably established after reading some of my articles on our blog but I have to admit that I am sold on ALL of these views that you included in this link-up! I am particularly intrigued by the view from the tree house – tempting to try that out for sure. Thanks for sharing such a vast plethora of views that make all of these spots appealing to stay at.

    • September 4, 2014 / 6:20 am

Thank you! I think these places sell themselves with the view, fortunately!! If you get to go toSA then i really recommend the treehouse!!

Hi Anna. I love that view with the wine glass. I’m a sucker for taking those kinds of photos, but never got such a great reflection! The view in Qasr al Sarab must have been so interesting. I”ve not travelled to a place with geography like that, and seeing the color of the dunes change in the light must have really been gorgeous. You’ve been to some really great Rooms view a View!

    • September 4, 2014 / 6:56 pm

all good views should have a wine glass in to ponder the view with!

Nice overview! Qasr al Sarab in UAE is my personal favorite. Cheers, Jempi
