Flashback Friday Travel Photos Memories 5 – Sailing at Marazion

My husband and I have done a lot of sailing and have been lucky to travel overseas from time to time to enjoy it too, but ask us both where our favourite regatta was and we’ll both say that it was this one – held in Marazion, near Penzance.  It is one of THE top sailing venues in the UK – launching is from a sandy beach which is typically sheltered by St Michaels Mount, and the sailing area is Mounts Bay is second to none – lovely long rolling waves that even a wuss like me enjoys!

Mr P has actually just finished another regatta down there yesterday – the same boat, but he was crewing for a good friend and I was at work!  They’ve had a lot of wind and rain, so I’m glad I was at work!  It is funny how timely this is – to be posting this one this week, when I’m waking up and looking out of my tent at Mount’s Bay – it was completely by chance!

We particularly enjoyed this regatta as it was the first ‘National Championships’ that we had done together and it was at a time when we were relatively new to the class and so making lots of new friends – it was a very sociable event!  The wind was also on our side too – for me the nervous crew the wind was between 10-15knots for most of the week which is the kind of weather we excelled in!  I think the last race we came 7th – and we came 21 out of 60 boats!  We were absolutely thrilled!

One memory that does stay with me though, is the reason why we did so well with prizes!  On the first day – we launched early with our great friends Howie and Lou and went out to do some 2 boat training!  Sadly however in a bid to get in that extra practice, we ended up missing the first race as we didn’t get to the start line while it was open! Whoops!  Fortunately there are discards when the full series is sailed – hence the good overall result!  What we did end up with however, is getting put in the bronze fleet which was definitely not where we should have been!  As a result we ended up with too many daily prize bottles of wine and excessive amounts of clothing vouchers!  So It worked rather well in our favour, even if it didn’t for those that should have been gunning for first in the Bronze fleet!
