WISH UPON A 2021 STAR

The simplest of wish lists this year… Accompanied by favourite photos from 2020, mostly taken at home!

Wish upon a 2021 star

Family and friends

To see my parents more than ten times, and to see them without having to worry what germs we might be carrying. To belly laugh with friends, not over zoom but in person. To give friends or family a big old hug. To see lots of friends all at the same time. To have a party – my 40th – with people actually in physical attendance. To have friends round to enjoy our entertaining space with us! To see new babies that some friends are having or have recently had! These things I wish for the most.

Travel

To sleep in a bed that isn’t mine a few times. To plan a holiday and then take planned holiday, without having to fight with the airline or insurance company to get our money back. To get on an aeroplane, I miss the buzz of it and Bertie would love it now he’s old enough to be fascinated. I’m not sure we’ll want to do it again in 2021, but when we do it will remind us what a privilege travel is. I hope our June trip to Anglesey will be spectacular.

Fun stuff

To go sailing again with my friends. To go and eat in a restaurant and not wonder if the people on the table next door will need me to isolate in a few days time. To visit fun museums like the Natural History, the Science Museum, Winchester Planetarium. I really wish for a successful introduction to sailing for our toddler too!

Work

I can’t wait to see my colleagues in person again. I want to see the people I talk with all day every day and take trips to see those overseas that I work closely with. Being away from home with work for just a night. I can’t imagine being on the same timezone to colleagues again and not rushing to fit things in first thing or last thing. Finding all my high heels in my locker and working out how to walk in them again… Getting my work clothes out of the loft and seeing if they still fit!

Couple stuff

We’re yet to have our 10th wedding anniversary supper out, so hopefully we can do that for the 11th. Which would mean my parents being permitted to baby sit for us. We’ve only ever had one night away from Little B and so I wouldn’t mind another. Date nights every once in a while would be nice too.

Toddler life

Indoor play dates, meeting up with a few mums at a time. Soft play. Brunch out… Not having to plan outdoor picnics in the rain… My toddler has an outdoor voice and apart from one trip to a garden centre to see Father C hasn’t been inside with friends (apart from nursery) since March! I really hope we can go swimming again, even if we have to get changed in the car park!

My 40th birthday

Well plans for the Maldives and a pub in our village pub are already shelved… But I’d still like to go and stay in a cottage in Devon and The Pig at Coombe as planned in March. And I’d rather like at least a little gathering too, even if it is a winter garden one! There’s a lot of 40th of friends to catch up on too!

To get a cough

And not panic or have to isolate. On that note, not to have to take every decision of going out or meeting people with an ‘is it worth it’ for the risk of track and trace isolation if you come into contact with someone that tests positive.

Relax

I don’t remember the last time I truly relaxed. It’s at least 9 months ago. It’s what I wish for most, to relax myself and with my family. To not worry about the risks and what could happen to others if they are exposed. To truly switch off and enjoy being somewhere. To not have to deal with negativity from others. It’s about time that ‘positive’ was a good thing and not a positive test for something nasty.

I wish everyone a very happy and healthy 2021 that brings more of the highlights of 2020 in a happier and healthier way like never before! The little things are now the big things we wish for more of. Anything more is an immense privilege.

Some very adorable photos from this past year, and a wish list I can certainly get behind! I love that you added “to get a cough” – it’s hard to imagine getting one and not freaking out about COVID, isn’t it? I think even once I’m fully vaccinated I’ll still be worried if and when I get a cough. But wouldn’t it be nice!

Simple little wishes! I know, just to have a bit of a cold and to know that it’s just a bit of a cold or run down ness… Glad to see you got your first jab!

My wishes are to meet my new nephew (now 4 months old), to hug my friends, and to sing with my choir. And for my daughter, to have school without distancing, and playdates, and Brownies.

I just hope a little portion comes true!
