Unwinding in New England – our itinerary

We are on the countdown to our holiday now!  May rattled past and here we are just a few (long) working days from some unwind and chill out time!  I am known by many as the ‘Anna-planna’ – I revel in planning anything (but HATE being left to divide up the bills at dinner just because I am an accountant)!  Planning 10 days in New England in June would be a simple process then? No. It was really tricky!  Perhaps I am overly fussy and make life more difficult than I should, but seriously – how hard can booking accommodation be.  Very – actually!  I uttered to Mr P a few weeks ago that I would rather just cancel the flights and have a staycation!  Then – like only a travel miracle can – it fell magically into place!  I changed my search tactics and hey presto we have an incredible itinerary!

Boston and Maine

Boston and Maine

Starting our trip off in style – we have cashed in a bundle of miles and are First Class and Concorde Room bound.  Spa treatments are booked and we are of course arriving at the airport unreasonably early for our flight!  But relax we must.  And I will need a glass or two of fizz to hit the shops (Mr P has been pre-reserving things)…. The flight to Boston isn’t long but we’ll definitely have enough time to relax in comfort.

Our first couple of nights across the pond we are in Boston.  We visited about 6 years ago at the start of a road trip to New York and loved the city, but we only had a day there and so more time is a real treat.  We are staying with Starwood in an old jail house – at the Liberty Hotel, part of their Luxury Collection of properties.  It looks like a fascinating hotel and in a great area just by the water and Beacon Hill.  On this visit we are looking forward to walking the Freedom Trail and mainly just having a relaxing time in a green and pretty city!

Then we head north and offshore.  I have always loved lighthouses and I stumbled upon an island lighthouse hotel – The Inn at Cuckolds Light.  It is a 2 room hotel on a rock in the ocean.  Regardless of what the weather brings we will be marooned on our private island for three nights and I am so excited about this!  Clearly we are hoping for good weather, but to be there in a storm – well, that would be incredible too!  Fortunately we have our sea legs!  We are both looking forward to home-cooked foods (the menu has me licking my lips), unbeatable views and peace and quiet (apart from the sound of the sea) to unwind.

Once we are back on dry land we head north to Camden which a great friend has given me rave reviews of.  I really wanted a sea view and eventually found the Inn at Sunrise Point which has plenty of view, and – I am assuming from the name – a sunrise view!  We’re looking forward to exploring Camden which sounds like a gorgeous town full of character.  Also nearby is Acadia National Park which will give us an incredible day out, as well as (happily) some vineyards to visit that come recommended!

Our final stop is en route back to Boston.  We are staying at the Captain Fairfield Inn in Kennebunkport. This area has some famous luxury hotels, yet none of them replied to email enquires (not about blogging, but basic queries about rooms).  This was when I almost gave up my planning as I was quite put out! Thankfully I stumbled across Captain Fairfield at just the right time and they have been charming and beyond helpful with dinner bookings and other suggestions for us.  I have a feeling I picked wisely.  The Inn looks gorgeous and comfortable and the history of Captain Fairfield is fascinating.

Aside from our first few nights in a luxury jail house, what I have found in Maine is luxury yet small, homely and local accommodation which personifies what drew us to the area in the first place as well as the type of accommodation we typically feel most relaxed in.  We haven’t made many plans yet, but the walking boots and trainers are coming with, as well as padded shorts for cycling and perhaps some sailing kit.  Books will make up the weight of the packing I am sure, although I’m thankful for the high luggage limit as the climate isn’t predictable so we need to prepare for every weather!

For this trip I will be keeping you up to date on our adventures (breaking my own rules of social media silence) – through my Instagram account – so please follow along and enjoy.  The lovely people at Microsoft Lumia got in touch and invited me to join their blogging community and trial one of their phones this month.  I am slowly getting to grips with the new operating system and look forward to sharing the highlights with my Lumia 830.

Looks like you have a great trip planned! I’m like you so overly fussy that I can end up going around in circles trying to decide where to stay!
    Lots of love,

The Concord Room sounds fabulous and I like the sound of the hotel in the old jail too. We had a wonderful stay at the Fairmont Copley in Boston. Hope you enjoy the Freedom Trail

It sounds like a fantastic vacation, hopefully there will be a sailboat for you to use at the lighthouse, 3 days sounds restricting unless you can explore off island

I think there are kayaks and things. We are both shattered, I have a feeling that if we sit on a lounger under a rug we’ll probably doze off entirely for one of the days!!
