Self catering luxury on the banks of Lough Swilly

I’m still congratulating myself on finding this property!  It really was perfect for what we wanted!  I am a big fan of fancy hotels and exemplary service, but the hotel offerings in the area didn’t seem right – certainly not as ‘local’ and rustic as they should be. And then we stumbled upon this lovely spot – right on the banks of Lough Swilly, just 15minutes from Letterkenny.  The property is owned by a renowned artist and we felt lucky to enjoy an evening with the hosts and see the gallery.  Ramelton (also spelt Rathmelton but we think pronounced Ram-EL-ton) is a very pretty village and has a mini-supermarket that has everything you’ll need.  It also has a sweet looking restaurant (The Bridge) and a few pubs.

There are 2 properties available, a 2 bed cottage and a 1 bed apartment.  Both have ample space and lovely views and feel like home – they are comfortable and have everything you will need.  We stayed in the smaller of the two.

The situation is lovely – it faces easy and so sunshine from morning to night given the size of the grounds.  There is adequate outside space and private parking for a car.  The cottage is about 4 miles out of the village and so beside seagulls, birds and cows, the location is incredible peaceful.

It has everything you need – a well-stocked kitchen, comfortable lounge, seating indoors and out, incredibly luxurious bed and a large bathroom with a strong shower!  Ample space too.  There is also a great fireplace that we made the most of, and the views down across the garden to the lough are very fine indeed.

The grounds are lovely too, very well cared for and with stunning views as well as a private stretch of shorefront and areas of decking that are perfect for a sun-downer.

We paid £250 for a 2 night break, worth every penny as far as we are both concerned.

Plenty to see in the local area – quite lovely indeed!

I just love that view down the garden, what an amazing landscape to look at every day when you wake up! This clearly was a perfect find for a weekend getaway (exactly the types of places we look for!!), very relaxing yet still with sufficient bells and whistles to make it a memorable trip.

In a way I wish it was easier to find s/c places such as this, but actually – because they are so rare, it is still ok that it is time-consuming really!!

Let’s not forget the luxury of having a comfortable bed to sleep in. You never know what you are going to get with a hotel room but with a luxury home, you are more likely going to end up with a comfortable mattress, soft linen and a pillow that will send you to sleep in seconds.
