Flashback Friday Travel Photo Memories – 3 – South Africa

This picture always makes me sigh happily!  What bliss!  We drove straight to this spot from the airport, got changed into summer clothes by the side of the road and headed straight for a paddle – with a view of Table Mountain and a view across to Robben Island the view really is quite jaw-dropping!  And the water is freezing!

Table View – November 2005

This was our first trip to South Africa, we went together a 2nd time for our honeymoon (checkout the back garden to our vineyard cottage) and Mr P has been there near on 20 times!  I have absolutely loved our visits there and wrote all about them for ALTB already.

This trip was right up there in terms of Mr P flexing his business travel clout (before Klout was a thing) – fancy flights and then a couple of complimentary nights at the Twelve Apostles!  We really wanted to stay near the city, but not on the city – I’m not sure we could have done better!  One morning we even saw whales from breakfast and the sundowner view is just epic!  This was also our first taste of SA food and wine proper and we were guests of honour on our first night there – wowsers!  I still remember just how amazed I was at the size of my prawns – I think 3 filled up a plate, nothing like the tiddlers we get back home!!  What made this trip even more memorable was that I finished my final ACA exams on the Wednesday lunchtime, I was picked up and we went straight up to the airport and tucked into fizz in the lounge.  Not a bad way to get over 10 hours of exams in 3 days!

A short trip, but we did all the key sites around the cape and the city and had time to ourselves, we then had a pleasure of attending a friends wedding at Morgenhof and what a great introduction to SA wine estates that was – their wine is delicious, I still buy it whenever I see it in Waitrose!  We also spent a few days roaming around Stellenbosch.  Everything we did gave us the taste for more and thankfully we made a 3 week return visit in April 2010!

Great idea to head straight to the beach from the airport 🙂

Sounds like you both have a lot of love for S Africa. As someone who also sat accounting exams I can fully understand the desire to take a holiday straight after the last one!

Also meant I slept incredibly well on the plane, such a long time ago now but I still remember just how tiring and stressful the final set of exams were!

This looks like a wonderful place to visit, wish it wasn’t so far away and expensive to get to, i’d visit in a heart beat!

the flights from the uk are exorbitantly expensive so can only imagine the extra leg from the states just makes it ridiculous. On a positive, on arrival you can enjoy the finest wine for £5-8 per bottle…

What a gorgeous setting that is with Table Mountain in the background. Have to agree with Noel’s comment that I would be on a plane right now if it wasn’t so expensive to get to South Africa but it is clearly worth it to experience that.

For me apart from the stunning setting and great photo, what does it is seeing your little feet in the sand. That’s just enough to communicate at least some of how you were feeling. The fact that you got changed by the side of the road is cool, and that you saw whales – well now we’re going into a little bit of jealousy …:)

I think we were a bit giddy about the sunshine – not so giddy that we could cope with the ice cold water temperature though!

What a great memory! I’m happy for you that you got a photo to capture the moment rather than just another selfie! Now it will always remind you of those feelings you had when you arrived.

Haha – the dreaded selfie, who started it, who do we blame, I suspect those kardashians?! We still try and do our photos with a little tripod instead of as a selfie – so much nicer, as visiting somewhere is about the place, not what we look like zoomed in!
